All Internal is one of those rare books in which I was quite speechless at the end. One thing I’ll say is that it certainly isn’t for readers who are put off by graphic sex scenes. All Internal is a dark tale filled with sexual deviance and Cronenberg style horrors. If I was to compare it to anything, I’d say it is like a mash-up of Joel Schumacher’s 8mm mixed with a little Naked Lunch, if you can imagine such a thing?
It’s a story that starts off in a very linear fashion as we are exposed to camgirl Anita’s interactions with various patrons via her webcam, then things get progressively weirder. These early voyeuristic passages are a little creepy (as you’d probably expect) but not as creepy as what comes later when we become privy to what is inside of Anita guiding her actions. These later parts prove to be difficult to read as Anita is subjected to scene after scene of hardcore sex and she is seemingly unable to control her actions. There is a feeling of hopelessness at the lack of control as Anita spirals into insecurity and she struggles to decipher what is real and what isn’t. Is she losing her mind?
There were times during All Internal that I thought back to reading Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons. If you’ve ever read the book then you will be aware that there are some scenes in the book where mind control is used by a character to indulge in his sexual escapades and I definitely got a similar vibe here except it is a parasite that invades Anita’s body. All Internal looks at the connection between the mind and the body and it will take you to a place where the character seemingly has control of neither.
This is certainly a book that won’t be for everybody, I’m not even sure it was entirely for me, but it is engaging to a certain extent. If you’re a fan of David Cronenberg’s movies and even the works of David Lynch then All Internal might be for you.
