With They Feed, Jason Parent goes old-school horror and delivers a great b-movie style gory read that hit all of the right notes for this reader. They Feed is a novel about strange creatures eating people alive in the woods and it is exactly the sort of book I wanted to read. What’s not to like?!
This book has a lot in common with some of the fabulous video nasties from the 1980s. I definitely got a Critters vibe when reading it. Parent’s monsters are very cool, a mash-up of Shaun Hutson’s Slugs and the before-mentioned Critters. The main character is Tyler, a young man with a troubled past and an equally troubling future after he is released from prison. He returns to the scene of his crime but gets more than he bargained for as They Feed goes into full-on survival horror mode! Tyler is trapped in a desperate fight for survival, but he isn’t alone as he is joined by a number of other interesting characters that feel pretty well fleshed-out for this type of novel. I don’t expect heaps of character development in books such as this, but I definitely need something or somebody to invest something in and Jason Parent does an admirable job here.
At the end of the day, with a book such as this, I want to read about folk being eaten alive and killed in the most unspeakably gross ways imaginable and Parent delivers in spades. The creatures that lurk in the woods aren’t simply dumb monsters, there exists a hive mentality and a cunning that horror fans will no doubt appreciate.
They Feed is a throwback to yesteryear, to a time when gore was the law! I enjoyed myself thoroughly whilst reading this book. It does exactly what it says on the tin and I for one am a very happy reader. At 254 pages, this is a breezy and fun-filled horror read. Well done Mr Parent!

Biography of Jason Parent
