Book review: Nightbird – David Busboom

Well, well, well, this is a tasty little novella from David Busboom. I went into this thinking it was a vampire story and I was so wrong. Nightbird is a fine debut novella from David Busboom. It’s one that is rich in character and heavy on atmosphere and I love the cover art; it’s simplistic in design, yet the writing is not so. Busboom weaves a wonderful tale of infatuation and lust in this coming-of-age story about young Isaac and his chance meeting with the girl of his dreams, Lilith. Lilith is a little unusual, to say the least, but she captivates young Isaac’s heart, however, Isaac’s naivety leads him on a foolish journey. How far will he go in order to be with her? I strongly recommend you read it and find out for yourself.

There are some very creepy scenes in this book and none more so than when Isaac first wakes alongside Lilith and sees her true form. I loved this scene. Here, Busboom creates vivid images that will fill you with dread and unease. These feelings continue throughout this excellent story. I really enjoyed this novella. It doesn’t go for cheap scares or gore, instead, it has a sort of classic feel to it thanks to the atmosphere created and fluidity of the writing which really worked for me.

In summary: Nightbird is a home run for me, It’s engaging and original, well-written, and I really enjoyed my time with it. Despite being a novella, Busboom manages to pack the story full of great imagery and lifelike characters. The pacing is great and the story has a creepy, haunting feel to it, a great debut for sure and highly recommended.

4/5 forked tongues from the Grim Reader.

  1. Awesome review Adrian, this sounds really good! I could be way off base, but this kind of sounds like it coukd be similar to the movie “Spring”, which I loved. I’m going to have to check this out!
