Book review: Recon Marines – P. K. Hawkins

When a group of 40+ battle-hardened marines investigate an enormous ship housing a host of biological nasties, things soon go pear-shaped. It doesn’t take long for our tough-talking soldiers to become locked in a fight for survival against all sorts of bizarre and other-worldly alien creatures.

Recon Marines does exactly as it says on the tin. It is a fast-paced, largely enjoyable military sci-fi story that pushed all of the right buttons for somebody like me who thoroughly enjoys a pulpy, fun read. If you’re looking for in-depth character development and epic world-building then look elsewhere. However, if you like movies such as Aliens, Predator, Starship Troopers, then prepare to strap yourself in for a couple of hours of high-octane entertainment.

The marines encounter some truly odd and unpleasant lifeforms whilst onboard the ship. This leads to many original and gruesome death scenes which see bodies explode, bodies swallowed whole, digested, impaled and eaten! The book rumbles along at a great pace as Marsden and his team watch the body count rise and there is always something going on. There isn’t much else to say about this one. It’s a quick read and entertains. Exactly what I wanted.

3.5/5 pulse rifles from The Grim Reader.

Well, you’ve sold me on the novel. Sometimes a novel just needs to be shoot em up bang bang fun.
