Book review: Black Site – Michael Patrick Hicks

Another day, another short story review from author, Michael Patrick Hicks. This time, Black Site, a book described as a little bit Lovecraft and a little bit Alien, and that is a pretty safe description although the main concept behind Black Site is cloning.

This is another quick read, but an absorbing one from Hicks. Black Site take place on an outer space mining station where genetic tampering brings about disastrous results. A clones awakening wraps the mining stations crew in a web of cosmic horror. Heads are easily crushed as Victor embraces his Elder power and in space no-one can hear you scream!

There is a lot to like about Black Site. From the set-up, to the execution, it is a story that fans of the above mentioned franchise will devour. The violence is graphic and Hicks pulls no punches with his descriptions. It is another one of those “What if?” stories. Cloning isn’t a good idea. I don’t think I’ve ever read a story where somebody puts a positive spin on it, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Black Site, like the stories that I have read before it offers little in the way of hope, but plenty in the way of hopelessness and despair.

This is a another great way to introduce yourself to Hicks’ works.

  1. Sounds great. Love the cover art. I seriously need to read more Sci-Fi.

I’m not a big Sci-Fi reader at all, but this is cool.
