Book review: Body Art – Kristopher Triana

First of all, I must tip my hat to the gang at Blood Bound Books for the fantastic presentation of this novel. The cover is classic VHS, 80s style and I love it. It captures the feel of the book perfectly.

Kristopher Triana’s ‘Body Art’ is an absolute smutfest! Porn superstar Kandi Hart is still plying her trade in the industry, although she doesn’t get as much cash as she used to, largely due to her age. When a call from one of her directors offers her the chance to earn some big money and be the star once more Kandi can’t possibly say no. Only problem is, Rutger (the director) is looking to make porn that goes beyond anything anyone has ever done before. Add to the mix a disturbing, necrophiliac undertaker called Harold, and a young sexed-up couple who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and what you get is an x-rated story filled with bodily fluids, body parts and hilarious movie titles.

About halfway through reading this book I sat thinking that it couldn’t get anymore hardcore…I was so, so wrong. The story takes a strange turn as Harold becomes more involved and a supernatural element is introduced taking this gruesome, sexed-up tale into a totally depraved and sadistic direction. Triana turns the gore and sex up to 11 (Spinal Tap style) as the movies being made become more and more horrific and disturbing. I’ve read a lot of books by Edward Lee, Bryan Smith, Wrath James White, books of questionable taste, gratuitous violence and gore. I’ve loved them all. Horror is supposed to shock and provoke a reaction, that’s why I like to read it but Body Art’s final third left me speechless. At times I really couldn’t believe what the hell I was reading.

Triana’s novel is an 80s style video nasty that will shock readers. Make no mistake, it certainly won’t be for everybody due to its brutal, unflinching style and recklessness though I do imagine Triana had his tongue firmly in cheek when he wrote this. It doesn’t pretend to be something it isn’t, it’s simply a crazy ride through a depraved authors imagination and I had a ball.
